PETRIFIED FOREST -
Bolidechaser Travels to the Petrified Forest
May 2, 1998
26 miles East of Holbrook
Apache County, Arizona

Bolidechaser takes a side trip to the Petrified Forest.
When I was a kid I made a promise to myself that if I was ever in this part of the country, I would have to visit the Petrified Forest, and the neighboring Painted Desert!

Bolidechaser's Petrified Forest Trip Log:

After visiting some rock shops in Holbrook, I entered the park from the South. At the main entrance the park ranger had me place any rocks that I had in the vehicle into a sealed bag. After I casually mentioned my interest in meteorites, the ranger informed me that at the Rainbow Museum there was another ranger with the same interests - Ranger Rita Garcia.

Petrified wood can be found in place in the volcanic ash/volcaniclastic deposits:

Be sure to stop at Stewart's Petrified Wood & Meteorites on your way back to Holbrook and the strewn field:

It is not permitted to collect petrified wood within the National Park. But it's easy to pick up a great specimen here. STEWART's is just 9 miles east of the strewn field and just north of Adamana at Exit 303:
